Apply for Debt HelpWhat are the consequences of not paying your rent?
If you fail to pay your rent and to reach out to your landlord and set up a repayment plan, your rent arrear will continue to increase.
In some cases, you may also be evicted from your home.
To avoid this, we highly recommend that you focus your efforts to repay your landlord what you owe.
How to deal with rent arrears
Confirm how much you owe to your landlord
You may find it useful to reach out to your landlord and ask them how much you owe them in total. Then make sure that the figure they are requesting is valid by checking your bank statements, rent book, and receipts (if you pay cash).
Calculate new budgets
Take a look at your current income and spending habits. Are there any changes that you can make which will allow you to have more money to repay your landlord?
Negotiate with your landlord
Contact your landlord and let them know you are aware of your outstanding rent payments. It might help to tell them why you fell behind with your rent, for example, if you were unemployed for a while. Then, inform them of your current situation and let them know the ideal repayment plan for you. Do not offer to pay more than you can afford, as this could make the problem worse.
